Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis is named not for floral similarities, but for the similarity in the leaves of the plant. This is a large sized, epiphytic species from New Guinea that is found at elevations below 500 meters and blooms on a basal, short, fasciculate inflorescence with the fetid smelling flowers clustered against the pseudobulb. A hot growing species that needs deep shade, good air circulation and high humidity to grow well.
